Zuni Fetishes

Julius Yuselew (d) Picasso marble bear fetish, 2-1/8” high by 2-7/8” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Julius was a sweet, handsome, melancholy boy who used to say that coming into the shop made him feel happy. 

Jonathan Sandy mother-of-pearl mountain goats atop rocky terrain, 1” high by 2-1/4" long by 2” wide, goats measure just under 1” long each, SOLD. Horns are carved pen shell.

Chris Yuselew (d) sgraffito black marble raven fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/4” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. There is a spiral etched on the raven’s breast. This guy is standing watch as the Navajo folk carving ravens do.

Dereath Vicenti magnesite with hematite textured porcupine fetish, 3/4” high by 2-3/8” long by 1” wide, SOLD. We don’t see many carvings by Dereath.

Saul Yuselew (d) turquoise bird fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-3/8” long by 1/2” wide, $300. Graceful freeform bird with a slightly turned head carved in beautiful turquoise.

Bremette Epaloose (d) white marble bear fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/4” long by 1-1/8” wide, SOLD. Bremette inlaid the bear’s back with turquoise bear paws.

Marvelita Phillips raspberry serpentine maiden fetish, 2-1/4” high by 1-3/8” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Unusual to find a Marvelita maiden in stone. Offering is a carved mother-of-pearl arrowhead secured in Marvelita’s signature manner with turquoise chips and feathers. Marvelita is daughter of Leonard “Old Man” Halate.

Ricky Vacit, Sr. jet raven fetish, 1-7/8” high by 1” long by 1” wide, SOLD. The Vacit family does mostly inlaid silver jewelry.

Vern Nieto (d) large white marble wolf fetish, 1-1/2” high by 4-3/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Domed turquoise eyes and a textured tail add to the distinctive musculature that is a hallmark of Vern’s carvings.

Aaron Sheche (d) black jet six-piece set of prey god fetishes of the hunt, SOLD. Each piece has a carved mother-of-pearl arrowhead offering bound with turquoise and branch coral, tied with genuine sinew. These carvings echo the illustrations on page 13 (and again on page 21) of the reprint of Frank Hamilton Cushing’s report to the Bureau of Ethnology and are described in great detail therein. Very rare to find a prey gods set. Each carving approximately 1-3/4” long and in perfect condition although more than 50 years old.

Todd Westika blue angelite buffalo fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/2” long by 1/2” wide, $150. Carved mother-of-pearl horns are the perfect elegant touch.

Dee Edaakie black jet flying raven fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-3/4” long by 2-3/4” wide, SOLD. Wonderful animation on this raven!

Saul Yuselew (d) creamy white fishrock serpentine bear fetish, 1” high by 1-1/2” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. With a carved mother-of-pearl arrowhead offering.

Randolph Yuselew Picasso marble wolf fetish, 3/4” high by 2” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. Randolph is great-grandson of Saul Yuselew. His carvings are rare to find.

Bremette Epaloose (d) black marble mountain lion fetish, 1-1/4” high by 2-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. This lion has his tail up on the back in the traditional Zuni manner but in Bremette’s own style.

Bobby Shack zebra marble horse fetish, 1-7/8” high by 4” long by 3/4” wide, $175. Great whimsical horse for this Year of the Fire Horse!

Saul Yuselew (d) sunset dolomite coyote fetish, 2” high by 1-1/2” long by 1/2” wide, SOLD. Not common to find a coyote by Saul!
