Zuni Fetishes

Theodore Kucate (d) Zuni travertine bear fetish c. 1940s, 1” high by 1-1/2” long by 1/2” wide, SOLD. Absolutely classic Theodore bear with an old turquoise chunk offering.

Julius Yuselew (d) etched black marble medicine bear fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. Julius rarely engraved his carvings.

Maxx Laate turquoise double fox kits fetish, 1-1/8” high by 1-3/4” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. These babies look like they are peering out of the den waiting for mama to come home.

Lena Boone bakelite flying eagle fetish with inlaid turquoise rain drops, 3/8” high by 1-1/2” long by 1” wide, SOLD. This bird was cut and carved by Lena from a strand of “Indonesian amber” beads. There is a hole drilled through the neck so it could be strung for wear. Lena made a necklace of 55 birds from this endeavor. This one was an extra.

Leland Boone porphyry stone eagle fetish, 1-3/4” high by 2-1/2” long by 3/4” wide, $95. Porphyry is said to protect against evil forces.

Hayes Leekya sodalite frog fetish, 3/4” high by 1-1/4” long by 1” wide, $85. This sleeping frog is pale blue with deep maroon matrix.

Anthony Mecale (d) Zuni azurite badger fetish, 1/2” high by 2-7/8” long by 1-1/2” wide, SOLD. Anthony was stepson of Dan Quam, and you can see that Dan Quam influence.

Cheryl Beyuka green sea snail butterfly fetish, 1-1/8” high by 1-1/8” long by 3/8” wide, SOLD. Beautifully etched flowers with coral centers adorn the wings of this graceful—and surprisingly stable—butterfly fetish.

Lena Boone Orthoceras fossil in black marble badger fetish, 3/4” high by 4” long by 1-3/4” wide, SOLD. A gold lip mother-of-pearl arrowhead is the offering.

Maxx Laate textured antler coiled snake fetish, 3/4” high by 1-3/4” long by 1-1/8” wide, SOLD. Detailed even on the underneath!

Elroy Gasper (d) Picasso marble wolf fetish, 1” high by 2” long by 1/2” wide, SOLD. Elroy’s work was always beautifully finished like his mother Dinah’s.

Derrick Kaamasee textured fluorite grouse fetish, 1-1/4” high by 1-1/2” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. Unusual for Derrick to carve fluorite.

Harvey Harker (d) antler owl fetish, 2-1/2” high by 1-1/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. The natural curve of the antler animates this owl.

Prudencia Quam and Vernon Lunasee quartz medicine bear fetish, 1-1/4” high by 1-3/4” long by 5/8” wide, $120. A white medicine bear with their trademark thumbprint! What could be more comforting?

Vernon Lunasee textured Picasso marble badger fetish, 3/4” high by 2” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. Vernon carved in the badger stripe and directed the fur out and down from that.

Michael Laweka black jet bear fetish, 1” high by 2” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. Michael has long been a fan of  the Sice/Peina family carvings. This one pays homage to Claudia Peina.

Lena Boone rhyolite bear fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. The rhyolite has a matte finish, very fur-like.

Daisy and LaVies Natewa serpentine frog mates fetish,  1” high by 1-1/2” long by 1” wide, SOLD. With a gold lip mother-of-pearl offering. A perfect celebration gift!

Alvin Haloo (d) textured black marble badger fetish, 3/4” high by 2-1/2” long by 1-1/8” wide, SOLD. Instead of incising a stripe, Alvin created a raised textured stripe like the ridge on a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Or a badger.

Maxx Laate textured pipestone cat fetish, 1-5/8” high by 2” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. This looks like one hefty, stubborn kitty. This might possibly be an African lion cub.

Fabian Tsethlikai fluorite wolf fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-1/4” long by 1” wide (curve), SOLD. Larger and more elaborate than most of Fabian’s carvings.

Bremette Epaloose (d) sardonyx wart hog fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-3/8” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Sardonyx is the original August birthstone.

Elroy Gasper (d) dolomite mountain lion fetish, 5/8” high by 2-1/8” long by 1/2” wide,  SOLD. A mountain lion of the cardinal color, with a lovely pen shell Weahkee arrowhead offering, this one possibly from his grandmother's (Edna Leki) stash.

Jonathan Natewa sgraffito black marble bear fetish, 2-1/8” high by 3-1/2” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. Jonathan is a master of sgraffito.

Enrike Leekya pale Picasso marble African lion fetish, 1-7/8” high by 2-7/8” long by 1-1/4” wide, $100. Like most younger generation carvers, Enrike likes to push the envelope with his subjects.

Lance Cheama textured Picasso marble fox fetish, 3/4” high by 2-1/4” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. This fox has a low sneaking posture; he is a hen house raider for sure.

Lena Boone aragonite frog fetish, 5/8” high by 2-1/8” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. Lena got this stone from a reconstruction site south of Albuquerque. That also is where friends experienced hibernating frogs emerging from the mud after a rainstorm—which is exactly what this frog looks like!

Bernard Homer, Jr. (d) jet bear fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. This is an early Bernard Jr. FULL DISCLOSURE: the two arrowheads look as if the points were broken some time ago, then smoothed off. 

Terrence Tsethlikai Brazilian fluorite sitting bear fetish, 1” high by 1” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Terrence has not made bears such as this for some time.

Charles Hustito (d) Zuni travertine frog fetish, 5/8” high by 7/8” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. These sphinx-like frogs are trademark of Charles's work, which is incredibly hard to find anymore.

Fred Bowannie Nutria jasper bear fetish c. 2001, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/4” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. One of Fred’s earliest bears, adorned with a carved quartz arrowhead.

Aaron (d) and Thelma (d) Sheche Salt River serpentine bobcat mates fetish, 1” high by 2” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD.  Based on the bobcats of Thelma's father Theodore Kucate. This pair has inlaid green turquoise eyes.
