Zuni Fetishes

Loren Tsalabutie blue angelite wolf fetish, 1-1/2” high by 3-1/2” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Loren gave this playful wolf red coral eyes.

Peter (d) and Dinah Gasper Picasso marble raven fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-1/2” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. This rare raven has Pete and Dinah’s silver name tag affixed under the tail, dating the piece to the early 2000s.

Gibbs Othole white clam shell mountain goat fetish pair, 1-1/8” high by 1-1/4” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. Measurements are for individual animals and are approximate. Gibbs used the curve of the clam shell to evoke the animals’ posture and movement. 

Jonathan Sandy textured serpentine buffalo fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Horns are carved jet. We rarely see Jonathan’s work.

Ricky Laahty natural Royston turquoise frog fetish family, 1-1/2” high by 1-1/8” long by 1-1/8” wide, $300. Papa Frog looks a bit like ET, doesn’t he? Ricky carved a bird with a turquoise egg in its mouth on the bottom, a nod to the cuckoo, who lays its eggs in other birds’ nests and leaves the chicks to be fostered.

Corwin Yamutewa white marble seated bear fetish c. 2005, 1-3/8” high by 1-1/4” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Corwin carved the foot pads on this sweet Teddy-like bear.

Hubert Pincion (d) yttrium fluorite resting wolf fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-3/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. A departure in subject and medium for Hubert, but just as serene as his soapstone swans and horses.

Freddie Leekya Zuni stone travertine squirrel fetish, 1” high by 2” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Freddie captured the alert mischievous nature of the animal perfectly.

Joey Quam (d) denim lapis badger fetish, 5/8” high by 1-3/4” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Joey’s work is very hard to find.

Daisy ​and LaVies Natewa black marble frog fetish with mother-of-pearl dragonfly passenger, 1/2” high by 1-1/2” long by 7/8” wide, $90. Both powerful water symbols. Daisy and LaVies no longer carve together.

Chris Yuselew (d) Mexican onyx coyote fetish, 1-7/8” high by 1-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. What a plump coyote pup! 

Gibbs Othole black marble mole fetish, 1/2” high by 1-1/4” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. Gibbs carved two subtle grooves on the head to indicate the mole’s almost invisible but highly effective ears.

Ricky Laahty peanut jasper quadruple frog fetish, 1/2” high by 1-1/2” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Four frogs carved in a single stone delineated by the stone’s layers, and a sun kachina face carved on the underside. For both rain and sunshine.

Ed Lementino malachite bear mates fetish, 3/4” high by 1” long by 1” wide, $80. Two separate malachite nuggets bound together with sinew, shell heishi, and turquoise chips.

Kenny Chavez ammonite fossil in black marble ram fetish, 1-1/4” high by 2” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. This carving bears Kenny’s elegant cursive signature along with his trademark inlaid silver eyes.

Calvin Weeka textured Picasso marble standing bear fetish, 2” high by 1-1/4” long by 1” wide, $150. Don’t be fooled by the smile—those claws look deadly.

Carlos Tsattie gold-lip mother-of-pearl mountain lion fetish, 2-1/8” high by 1-1/4” long by 5/8” wide, $120. A very pure, blemish-free piece of mother-of-pearl shell.

Michael Coble black marble nesting raven fetish, 2-1/4” high by 2” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Michael’s work is unique among Zuni carvers: his textures are strong and varied and his finishes are matte. I am told he uses wax on the stone instead of polishing compound. 

Gibbs Othole blue angelite resting duck fetish, 1-1/4” high by 1-3/4” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Once again, Gibbs captures the expression of the resting duck perfectly.

Dee Edaakie large ​Dominican amber eagle fetish, 2-1/4” high by 1-1/4” long by 7/8” wide, $400. We have not seen amber of this size and quality since the early 2000s when this eagle was carved.

Corwin Yamutewa white marble bunny fetish, 1” high by 1-1/2” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Inlaid red coral eyes and pink mussel shell inner ears. These bunnies are much missed since Corwin retired from carving.

Ricky Laahty variscite frog fetish, 1/2” high by 1-1/2” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. A very pure specimen of variscite. Ricky carved a parrot on the bottom. 

 Leonardo Poblano Chattin abalone bird fetish earrings, 2-1/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. The abalone bird is strung with coral and jade beads and fitted with sterling silver findings.

Ron Laahty (d) Bisbee turquoise buffalo fetish pendant, 3/4” high by 1” long by 1/4” wide, SOLD. Horns are gold-lip mother-of-pearl; sterling silver diamond cut box chain is 18” long.

Leonard “Old Man” Halate (d) ivory stone calcite polar bear fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2-3/4” long by 1” wide, SOLD. An early carving by Leonard before he adopted his famous folk-art style. Very rare.
