Zuni Fetishes

Loren Tsalabutie stichtite mountain lion fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2” long by 1” wide, $330. Stichtite is rarely seen in carvings anymore. Loren gave this lion a necklace of turquoise chip and coral beads.

Ricky Laahty natural Burnham turquoise mini frog fetish, 3/8” high by 1” long by 1/2” wide, HOLD. From Morris’s unworked stones. Ricky carved a big-eared critter face on the underside.

LoRae Lonasee dolomite buffalo fetish, 1” high by 1-1/2” long by 3/4” wide, $120. The horns and hooves are carved and the mane lightly textured. LoRae is a great-granddaughter of Sepo Ponchuella.

Melissa Quam malachite double bear fetish, 3/4” high by 1-1/2” long by 1” wide, $150. Both of the bears share a natural heart line.

Chris Yuselew (d) travertine turtle fetish, 1” high by 2-1/8” long by 1-1/4” wide, $250. Look at that smile!

Lena Boone (d) blue angelite beaver fetish, 1” high by 2-1/4” long by 1” wide, SOLD. Lena loved beavers, which is appropriate given how industrious she was.

Dee Edaakie peacock pyrite mouse fetish, 1-3/4” high by 1” long by 1” wide, $190. Most of the bornite crystals have been polished down level with the metal ore, but the color and flash can still be seen.

Daniel Chattin white conch or whelk shell double maiden fetish, 2” high by 2” long by 1-1/2” wide, $100. Daniel removed all the fragile edges but left the natural shell shape and texture on the bottom, and incised corn patterns on the maiden bodies. 

Jayne Quam jet mole (guardian of the lower region) carrying the other directional fetishes, 1-1/4” high by 3” long by 2-1/4” wide, $150. Jayne originated this style of directional carving although she has not made one for some time. There is a pink mussel shell arrowhead offering on which rests the augite eagle for the upper region. Around the mole are a white marble wolf, pipestone badger, turquoise bear, and onyx mountain lion--all six directions in their cardinal colors.

Terrance Martza fishrock serpentine bear family fetish, 1” high by 2” long by 1-1/4” wide, $140. Terrance’s usual intricate linework and inlay are featured on the mama bear as well as the two cubs.

Lena Boone (d) Mexican lace agate badger fetish, 3/4” high by 2” long by 7/8” wide, $100. This wildly patterned stone has enough red to qualify as a cardinal badger.

Faye Quandelacy (d) turquoise double maiden fetish, 3” high by 2” long by 5/8” wide, $200. Faye was classically trained in art and studied under famous Chiricahua Apache sculptor Allen Houser whose works grace the grounds of the Wheelwright Museum.

Russell Shack (d) sgraffito black marble ram fetish, 1” high by 1-3/4” long by 5/8” wide, $90. These big horn ram fetishes are hard to find, like the rams themselves.

Ricky Laahty green serpentine frog fetish, 5/8” high by 1-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, $180. There is an unknown critter carved on the underside.

Eddie Hannaweeke grey marble bear fetish, 1-1/8” high by 1-3/8” long by 3/4” wide, $110. This is a chunky little fellow!

Claudia Peina elk antler corn-grinding-maiden fetish, 3” high by 1-1/8” long by 1” wide, SOLD. This maiden-at-work form is Claudia’s invention.

Dilbert Gasper incised black marble pigeon fetish, 1-3/4” high by 1-3/4” long by 1” wide, $120. Can’t you just hear this pigeon crooning?

Michael Mahooty blue onyx bear fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-5/8” long by 5/8” wide, $120. A beautiful stone topped with a lovely carved pen shell offering.

Loubert Soseeah and Rosella Lunasee Baltic amber mountain lion fetish, 1” high by 1-3/4” long by 1” wide, $150. The tail on this gorgeous lion is curled at one side.

Emery Eriacho (d) lapis bear fetish, 1-1/4” high by 1-7/8” long by 1/2” wide, $100. If you do not have a lapis bear or an Emery bear, this is your lucky day.

Saul Yuselew (d) dolomite wolf fetish, 7/8” high by 2” long by 1/2” wide, $300. This dolomite is different on each side. Saul’s bear fetishes are carried to keep people healthy, but Kent always said you should have a wolf or lion for your dog or cat.

Aaron and Thelma Sheche (both d) green banded serpentine wolf mates fetish, 1” high by 2-1/2” long by 1/2” wide, $300. Carved from a single stone and bound for life with Aaron’s distinctive carved arrowhead.
