Zuni Fetishes
Dan Quam (d) Picasso marble mountain lion fetish, 7/8” high by 3-3/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Dan is known as the father of realistic fetish carving. He shared his expertise with the carvers in his large extended family, thus establishing the genre. This long, lean lion is a wonderful example of Dan’s inspirational work.
Ricky Laahty Zuni azurite frog fetish, 3/4” high by 1-1/4” long by 1” wide, SOLD. This is an early carving by Ricky, before he began making compound eyes and carving critters on the bottom. The frog wears two finely carved leaves—“Leekya leaves” in honor of Ricky’s great uncle Leekya Deyuse.
Lena Boone wonderstone rhyolite badger fetish, 3/4” high by 2-5/8” long by 1-5/8” wide, SOLD. Just red enough to be a directional badger.
Loren Tsalabutie Australian chrysoprase fox fetish, 1” high by 2” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. This fox has all Loren’s trademark animation while also being very self-contained.
Rickson Kallestewa alabaster bear with cub fetish, 1-3/4” high by 4” long by 1-3/4” wide, SOLD. Rick’s bears often cradle feeding bowls; this one cradles her cub.
David Chavez Indian paint stone mountain lion fetish, 3/4” high by 3” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. David finished this gorgeous stone with a matte polish, very cat-like.
Evalena Boone labradorite eagle fetish, 1-1/2” high by 1-3/4” long by 1/2” wide, SOLD. Flashy as can be—perfect for “all colors” directional eagle.
Hudson Sandy textured turquoise fish fetish, 1-1/2” high by 3/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Hudson was very pleased with the color of the turquoise in this carving.
Dee Edaakie apple coral badger fetish, 1/2” high by 1-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. With lapis eyes, this tiny badger is cuteness personified.
Gibbs Othole black-and-white marble gliding penguin fetish, 7/8” high by 2-1/2” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. So joyful! Gibbs is a master at expression, which lends great realism to his minimalist carvings.
Evalena Boone selenite crystal owl fetish, 2” high by 1-1/4” long by 3/4” wide, $75. A moonlight owl.
Brian Yatsattie crushed shell in resin turtle fetish, 3/4” high by 2” long by 1” wide, $125. Brian is something of a pioneer when it comes to working new and unusual materials. This one is used mostly in jewelry.
Lynn Quam variscite buffalo fetish, 1-3/4” high by 2-3/4” long by 3/4” wide, $150. A beautiful creamy green bison.
Fernando Laiwakete leopard marble bear fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2” long by 1/2” wide, $95. With a precise inlaid turquoise heart line and an offering of gold lip mother-of-pearl arrowhead.
Brion Hattie blue angelite mountain lion fetish, 1” high by 2-3/4” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. A beautiful stone with a dramatic carved black marble arrowhead bundle. Very like the work of his brother Jeff Tsalabutie.
Loren Tsalabutie black marble skunk, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Once again, perfect pose and animation, not to mention the shape of the tail.
Hudson Sandy textured turquoise beaver fetish, 3/4” high by 1” long by 1” wide, $110. A new subject for Hudson!
Kenny Chavez white banded onyx cat fetish, 2” high by 5/8” long by 5/8” wide, $85. Kenny regularly carves domestic cat fetishes.
Loren Tsalabutie lapis porcupine fetish, 1-1/4” high by 1-1/2” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. I love Loren’s perky porcupines!
Gibbs Othole vivid dolomite mountain lion fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-1/8” long by 5/8” wide, SOLD. Gibbs always captures the personality of his subjects, especially the cats.
Ricky Laahty Orville Jack turquoise frog fetish, 1/2” high by 1-1/2” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Another beautiful vintage Ricky, like the azurite one above, and also sporting a Leekya leaf.
Julius Yuselew (d) orange calcite hawk fetish, 2” high by 3/4” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Julius very seldom carved birds of prey.
Charles Martinez Jr. textured ironwood mountain lion fetish, 1-3/4” high by 4-1/8” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. Ironwood is found in the Sonoran Desert, and is harder and heavier than the cedar commonly carved at Zuni.
Hudson Sandy textured butter stone horned toad fetish, 1-1/2” high by 2-1/4” long by 1-1/2” wide, $195. Hudson crosshatched the back, carved a spiny topknot and collar, and gave this toad rain drops of turquoise and coral.
Dee Edaakie yttrium fluorite baby bear fetish, 1-1/8” high by 1-3/4” long by 3/4” wide, $125. A little sweetie!
Ron Laahty (d) Picasso marble bunny fetish, 1” high by 1” long by 3/4” wide, SOLD. Ron’s bunnies are like nobody else’s!
Lena Boone aragonite bear fetish, 2-1/2” high by 3” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. Aragonite is found in Spain (hence the name, for Aragon) and here in New Mexico, notably in Carlsbad Caverns. The void shown on the bear’s left side is called a vug, and holds the remains of crystals.
Loren Tsalabutie boulder opal balancing bear fetish, 2-1/2” high by 3-3/4” long by 2” wide, $780. This bear has only one pose, but it is a stunner! The Jack Palance one-arm pushup. And perfectly balanced; this bear is more stable than some on all fours.
