Zuni Fetishes
Aaron Sheche (d) rare Salt River serpentine prey eagle fetish on abalone arrowhead c. 1970, 1-1/2” high by 3” long by 1-1/8” wide, SOLD. Modeled after the prey eagle in Cushing’s monograph including the turquoise and coral inlay on the tail. The only one of these I have seen and the earliest Aaron I have seen. Perfect condition; eagle is tied with sinew, not glued.
Loren Tsalabutie large apatite bear fetish, 2” high by 3-3/4” long by 1-3/8” wide, SOLD. Beautiful dark teal apatite with coral eyes and a purple alunite arrowhead offering tied with turquoise and coral. Colorful!
Ricky Laahty textured shark’s tooth bear fetish, 1” high by 1-1/2” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. Ricky’s compound eyes and—yes—another bear engraved on the underside. Another unusual material for Ricky. There is an entire case in the new museum exhibit devoted to this “one man’s materials."
Francis Leekya (d) Zuni stone travertine bear fetish, 1-1/4” high by 2-1/4” long by 1” wide, $600. Circa early 2000 before his stroke, this bear has carved paw marks underneath and an offering of black abalone Leekya leaf with turquoise and coral. Classic.
Loren Tsalabutie yellow calcite owl fetish, 2” high by 1-1/2” long by 1-1/2” wide, $330. Looking backward with his inlaid turquoise eyes. The crystal formations in the calcite make nice feather-like markings.
Aaron and Thelma Sheche (both d.) Peruvian blue angelite wolf mates fetish, 1” high by 3” long by 1/2” wide, $380. These mates carved from a single stone represent marital bonding.
Aaron and Thelma Sheche (both d.) banded serpentine wolf mates fetish, 7/8” high by 3-1/4” long by 1/2” wide, SOLD. Slightly longer than the previous pair and earlier by a decade or so, but equally spiritual.
Andres Quandelacy (d) multi-stone multi-animal fetish necklace, 27” long to bottom center mountain lion, SOLD. Stones include mother-of-pearl, spiny oyster shell, turquoise, malachite, amber, and jet. Center mountain lion (1” high by 1-3/4” long) is mother-of-pearl with inlaid coral heart line. Buffalo carvings have inlaid carved coral horns. Strung on old coral beads interspersed with small glass trade beads. Finished with handmade silver cones and silver “A Quandelacy” name tag. A stunning statement fetish necklace.
Ricky Laahty septarian nodule frog fetish, 1/2” high by 1-1/4” long by 1-1/4” wide, SOLD. The deepest color I have ever seen in a septarian stone. An owl face peers out underneath.
Lena Boone (d) banded agate badger fetish, 1” high by 2-1/2” long by 7/8” wide, SOLD. This plump badger has red coral eyes and shows colors of green, lavender, pink, and cream.
Loren Tsalabutie sodalite sea turtle fetish, 1-1/8” high by 2-1/2” wide by 2-1/8” long, $300. A hefty guy with beautiful white patterns in the dark blue sodalite.
Ricky Laahty dark green and gold ocean jasper politician frog, 1” high by 3/4” long by 1/2” wide, SOLD. The bonus carving is two more faces—Ricky’s got all the politicians covered!
