Plains tribal arts vary as much as the people and tribes who produce them.  Stretching from Oklahoma into prairie Canada, Plains peoples remain known primarily for their beadwork.  Beading itself is an incredibly labor intensive art, no matter what style (flat, lazy and peyote stitch, among others).  Plains artists also create many interesting painted and porcupine quilled items as well.  Porcupine quill work commands the utmost respect, as it takes the greatest preparation and talent to do properly.  Both painted and quill work pre-date beadwork, because beads were a Euro-American introduction.  All of these techniques are often done on smoke-tanned or brain-tanned hides.  The tanning alone is a very time-consuming process.  In addition, wood, antler, pipestone and other materials are carved into animal effigies, pipes and even bowls.
