Grey
Dog Trading Company is jointly owned by Kent and Laurie
McManis. In our gallery we have over 50 years combined
experience in the Native American art business. The business
grew from a life-long interest that for Kent began at age
three when he got his first Hopi katsina doll (kachina
doll). It is very fortunate when an individual passion
develops into a profession, and for Kent it has been his
sole professional pursuit. Kent is also a frequent judge
at juried events for southwestern Native American arts,
such as Gallup Ceremonial, Santa Fe Indian Market, and
the Heard Museum show.
The
selections in our gallery reflect our love of high quality,
handmade Native art focusing primarily on southwestern
tribes, including Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, Santa Clara, and
Santo Domingo, among others. We exhibit exceptional
Hopi katsina dolls (kachina dolls) by artists such as Dennis
Tewa, Ros George, Robert Albert, Arthur Holmes, Jr., and
Brian Honyouti. We
carry exclusively Zuni fetishes, and include the names
and family associations of all the carvers. Famous Navajo
weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas shows her fine tapestries
in our store. We also show hand-coiled
pottery by a range of talented artists including Alice
Cling and the Folwell/Naranjo family, as well as many noted
miniaturists. Our
Navajo and Pueblo jewelry is carefully selected for originality
and beauty.
We
are also pleased to show Inuit sculpture from across the
Canadian Arctic, and the distinctive Plains beadwork of
such artists as Jackie Bread (Blackfeet) and Marty Cuny (Lakota).
Kent
is the author of five books on Zuni fetishes, Navajo
rugs, and Hopi katsina dolls (see the Books page). We
feel education is one of our most important services
and will be happy to answer questions regarding any of
our items (greydog@greydogtrading.com).
