Brian Honyouti katsina dolls

Brian Honyouti

Brian Honyouti is one of the most innovative Hopi katsina doll carvers.  He created much of the look that is common in today's dolls.  He started using wood preservers as opposed to acrylic paints to leave areas of the dolls showing wood tones.  He also began using oils to lend more subtlety.  Brian helped popularize one-piece action dolls and began creating uniquely detailed and painted bases.  Brian is legally blind, and despite this, he has become one of Hopi's truly important carvers.  He is also a very humble man.
